Next.js Basics

Next.js is a powerful React framework developed by Vercel that enables developers to build fast, scalable, and production-ready web applications. It extends React by providing features such as file-based routing, server-side rendering, static site generation, API routes, image optimization, and improved performance out of the box.

Why Use Next.js?

React is excellent for building user interfaces, but it requires additional configuration for routing, performance optimization, and server-side rendering. Next.js solves these challenges by providing a complete framework with sensible defaults and developer-friendly tools.

Some key benefits of Next.js include:

  • Fast page loading
  • SEO-friendly rendering
  • Built-in routing system
  • Optimized image handling
  • Server Components support
  • API routes
  • Automatic code splitting

File-Based Routing

One of the most useful features of Next.js is file-based routing.

For example:

app/
├── page.js
├── about/
│   └── page.js
└── contact/
    └── page.js

This structure automatically creates the following routes:

  • /
  • /about
  • /contact

No additional routing configuration is required.

Server and Client Components

By default, components inside the App Router are Server Components. These components run on the server and reduce the amount of JavaScript sent to the browser.

To create a Client Component, add:

"use client";

at the top of the file.

Client Components are useful when using:

  • useState
  • useEffect
  • Event handlers
  • Browser APIs

Image Optimization

Next.js provides the Image component for optimized image loading.

import Image from "next/image";

<Image
  src="/profile.jpg"
  alt="Profile"
  width={500}
  height={500}
/>

Benefits include:

  • Lazy loading
  • Responsive images
  • Faster loading times
  • Better performance scores

Navigation

Navigation is handled using the Link component.

import Link from "next/link";

<Link href="/about">
  About
</Link>

This enables client-side navigation without full page reloads.

Dynamic Routes

Dynamic routes allow pages to be generated from parameters.

Example:

app/blog/[slug]/page.jsx

Visiting:

/blog/nextjs-basics

provides access to:

params.slug

inside the page component.

API Routes

Next.js can create backend endpoints directly inside the project.

Example:

export async function GET() {
  return Response.json({
    message: "Hello World",
  });
}

This makes it easy to build full-stack applications without a separate backend.

Conclusion

Next.js is one of the most popular frameworks for modern web development. It combines the flexibility of React with powerful built-in features such as routing, server rendering, image optimization, and API handling. Whether you are building a portfolio, blog, e-commerce website, or SaaS application, Next.js provides the tools needed to create fast and scalable applications efficiently.
